Abstract:
Spinel (MgA1204) single crystals which had been neutron irradiated to high doses (53-
250 dpa) were examined using 27AI magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR). The sensitivity of this procedure to a specific cation (AI) residing in
different crystallographic environments allowed us to determine the distribution of the
AI between the two cation sites in the spinel structure. The samples were irradiated at
two different temperatures (400 and 750%) and various doses. Our results indicate
that the AI was nearly fully disordered over the two lattice sites after irradiation.
