Although the motives of hard adventure tourists represent a well-established research object, the theoretical
foundations which can explain why experienced mountaineers engage in regular ascents remain underexamined. This study proposes that the concept of calling can help understand mountaineering motivations
and explores its role on a sample of highly experienced mountaineers in Kazakhstan (n = 17). The findings of
interpretative phenomenological analysis demonstrate how mountaineers view climbing as a calling. The find
ings reveal pursuits of novelty, re-lived climbing experiences and self-actualization as the inner calls shaping the
meaning and purpose in life for mountaineering tourists. The study shows that, despite their risks, regular ascents
enable experienced mountaineers to reach mindfulness, thus enhancing personal well-being. Theoretically, the
study aids in conceptualizing mountaineering as a calling in life. Practically, it suggests that mountaineering can
aid in achieving mindfulness and, if practiced regularly, regular ascents can help (re-)build emotional resilience
of hard adventure tourists.
Management implications: The study demonstrates how experienced mountaineers consider regular ascents as
their calling in life. This holds important implications for management and marketing of hard adventure tourism.
More specifically, tourism managers and marketers should strive to appeal to experienced mountaineers by
highlighting the novelty of climbing itineraries. They should also emphasize how regular ascents can aid
mountaineering tourists to re-live their climbing experiences, achieve self-actualization, and reach mindfulness.
The study shows that, for experienced hard adventure tourists, the opportunity to re-engage may represent a
strong inner call and even determine the main purpose and meaning in their lives.

The concept of dark tourism has attracted considerable attention in recent years.
The studies in this field examine the convergence of tourism and morbidity. The research
problem lies in understanding the complex dynamics between the preservation of historical sites associated with Kazakhstan’s former gulags and their role in the emerging
dark tourism sector. This paper explores the tourist significance of the former gulags in
Kazakhstan through the analysis of interviews, legislation texts and policy documents, and
data on visitor numbers. Our aim is to illuminate the historical importance for tourism,
educational value, and stakeholders associated with the preservation and promotion of
these destinations. The analysis revealed the various and sometimes conflicting interests
and concerns of the stakeholders, including tourists, local communities, government institutions, and the private sector. The analysis of statistical data provided valuable information
on visitor demographics, preferences, and trends in the Karlag and Alzhir museums. These
data highlighted the role of educational institutions and demonstrated the adaptability
of museums in difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. During the formation of
future policies, effective collaboration with stakeholders, responsible tourism practices,
capacity building, and sustainable marketing strategies are essential to the ethical and
sustainable management of dark tourist sites. Thus, stakeholders can ensure that dark
tourism continues to evolve in a way that respects historical integrity and benefits local
communities, while contributing to the broader goals of education and commemoration.

In the digital age, the reading habits of Kazakh youth have transformed signifcantly. This study investigates the impact of digitalization on their reading culture,
examining factors contributing to the decline of traditional print formats and their
efects on reading frequency, preferences and comprehension. The research explores
the role of social communications, electronic devices and online resources in shaping these changes. Using a survey method, data was collected from university students—undergraduates and doctoral candidates—revealing both positive and negative impacts of digital platforms. While ofering convenience and interactivity, these
platforms also bring challenges, such as information overload and distractions. Surprisingly, the younger generation shows increased consumption of content in the
Kazakh language compared to older generations. Understanding these preferences is
crucial for preserving linguistic, moral and aesthetic values. The study contributes to
the broader discourse on digitization, advocating for balanced strategies that leverage digital advantages while safeguarding traditional reading practices.

The object of this study is the
accuracy of announcer identification based on short utterances.
To solve the task of speaker identification based on ultrashort speech utterances, a phoneme-by-phoneme approach to
constructing voice models has
been proposed within the framework of the study. The validity
of this approach is based on the
fact that short utterances usually
contain a limited number of phonemes. In this regard, a hypothesis was put forward assuming
that in order to increase the accuracy of announcer identification
based on short utterances, it is
necessary to analyze the sound
of specific phonemes by different
announcers.
The experiments involved
speech recordings of monosyllabic words with corresponding
phonemes, on the basis of which,
using the ECAPA-TDNN neural
network architecture, announcer voice models were constructed.
The experimental studies showed
that voice models constructed
based on the sounds of only one
model provide higher announcer
identification accuracy compared
to generalized models constructed
based on all speech sounds.
It was also found that different phonemes provide different
announcer identification accuracy. For example, with a speech
signal duration of 2–3 seconds,
the accuracy of announcer identification by the generalized model
was 75 %. And the accuracy of
announcer identification using a
model built on the basis of only
one phoneme "E", with the same
input data, was 85 %, which is
10 percentage points higher than
that of the generalized model
